UK datacentres projected to create 10,400 jobs, analysis says

Environmental thinktank Verdant estimates that all datacentres currently planned in the UK would directly employ 10,400 workers. That figure is about one-quarter of the more than 40,000 jobs projected by TechUK, the technology industry’s lobby group, while the facilities are also expected to consume large amounts of energy.

Datacentres currently planned in the UK are likely to directly employ 10,400 workers, according to analysis by environmental thinktank Verdant.

The estimate is about a quarter of the more than 40,000 jobs cited in projections by TechUK, the technology industry lobby group.

Verdant’s research also says the facilities will consume vast amounts of energy.

THE QUESTIONS THIS EVENT LEAVES BEHIND

What assumptions account for the difference between Verdant’s estimate and TechUK’s projection?

How many of the projected jobs would be permanent rather than linked to construction or expansion?

What energy demand would the planned datacentres add, and who would bear its costs?

What evidence would change either estimate before the facilities are built?
