The 1981 docufictional comedy Take It or Leave It follows Madness from their beginnings in 1976 to their chart breakthrough. Set across north London, it portrays the working-class ska-pop musicians playing parties, taking temporary work, travelling to gigs and struggling through rehearsals before Graham “Suggs” McPherson’s arrival as singer helps the band find its sound.

Take It or Leave It is a 1981 docufictional comedy about the rise of Madness, following the group from its beginnings in 1976 to its chart breakthrough. The film presents the musicians as penniless and music-obsessed young men moving through north London’s Camden Town, Stoke Newington and Crouch End.

The band members play at people’s parties, sign on the dole and take on difficult temporary jobs. They are reprimanded by site foremen and office supervisors, travel to gigs in vans, and nearly become involved in confrontations with skinheads. Rehearsals bring further disorder, including serious arguments with the drummer.

The film’s account also focuses on the group’s early musical development. Graham “Suggs” McPherson’s arrival as singer is presented as the point around which the band’s progress gathers, with his vocals combining with keyboards, saxophone and the group’s energetic stage movement.

The review describes the film as atmospheric, funny and alarming, while praising its depiction of the band’s working-class setting and early struggles. It characterizes the portrayal as unusually revealing and authentic in its treatment of Madness before their breakthrough.
