London’s Gate theatre to close after nearly 50 years

The Gate theatre in London will close permanently next month after nearly five decades of producing radical plays and supporting new talent. The theatre said a 100% cut to its Arts Council England funding in 2022, worth just over £300,000, ended its status as a National Portfolio Organisation; it later moved to partner venues after leaving year-round premises.

The Gate theatre in London is to close permanently next month, nearly 50 years after it was founded above a pub in Notting Hill in 1979.

The theatre became known for radical plays and new talent. In 2022, it lost 100% of its Arts Council England funding, which had been just over £300,000, and its status as a National Portfolio Organisation.

The Gate had moved to a more accessible venue at Theatro Technis in north London a few months earlier. In 2024, it announced that operating year-round from one building was no longer viable and began working with partner venues.
