Israeli embassy spokesperson criticises UK sanctions on settlements

An Israeli embassy spokesperson in London described the UK’s sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements as a “nuclear option” between democratic countries. Alex Gandler said the timing was especially damaging, citing Israel’s war with Iran, upcoming elections and high holidays, while the UK foreign secretary said he regretted Israel’s response but remained proud of his actions.

Alex Gandler, a spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in London, criticised the UK’s ban on trade with Israeli settlements, calling it a diplomatic “nuclear option” against Israel.

Speaking to the Today programme, Gandler said Israel wanted a response and a conversation between friends. He said the measure was unusual between democratic countries, particularly while Israel was at war and fighting a shared enemy in Iran.

Gandler said the timing was damaging because Israel was less than 50 days from elections and approaching its high holidays. He also said the sanctions created an atmosphere for violence against Jews.

The UK foreign secretary said he regretted Israel’s response to the ban but was proud of his actions.
