Indonesia is constructing its new capital, Nusantara, in the mountains of East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. This development has introduced the noise of chainsaws, changing the natural sounds that have been part of the cultural heritage of the Indigenous Balik community. A documentary titled Sound Guardians, produced in collaboration between Mongabay, Scientific American, and Project Multatuli, follows efforts by scientists and indigenous groups to document these changes and their impacts.
