The Beatles’ Abbey Road cover turns an ordinary crossing into an enduring image

The Beatles’ Abbey Road cover is remembered for more than the four musicians crossing a road. The image also highlights the north London street behind them, including a receding road, a zebra crossing, summer trees and a blue sky.

Photographer Iain Macmillan took the picture on 8 August 1969. The ordinary act of the Beatles crossing the road became striking because of the group’s fame at the time.
