A gap that is manageable on flat roads may become dangerous when the route enters climbs, descents, narrow roads, or strong crosswinds. Terrain changes both speed and cooperation.

On a climb, aerodynamic protection becomes less important because speeds fall. Strong climbers in the breakaway may then preserve their advantage more effectively than expected. On a technical descent, skilled riders can maintain distance while forcing the peloton to accept greater risk if it wants to chase aggressively.

Sprint teams calculate the catch backward from the finish

On a stage expected to end in a mass sprint, teams often estimate how much time can be recovered per kilometre. They compare the breakaway’s advantage, the number and strength of the riders ahead, wind conditions, road width, and the amount of chasing power available.

The calculation is not exact. A breakaway may slow when cooperation collapses, or it may accelerate when riders realize victory is possible. The peloton may lose time through crashes, corners, or tactical disagreement. A headwind can help the larger group, while a tailwind can make the attackers harder to catch.

Nevertheless, the chase is usually planned rather than improvised. Teams do not need the breakaway immediately behind them. They need the gap to reach zero before the finish, with enough riders and energy remaining to position their sprinter.

A perfectly timed chase looks calm for most of the race because urgency has been postponed, not forgotten.
