Why do people keep product boxes long after they are needed?
Sometimes a box stores possibilities instead of objects.
A television box may sit on top of a wardrobe for years without being opened. At first glance, this looks irrational. The product works, the warranty may have expired, and the box occupies valuable space. However, the box is rarely kept because of cardboard. It is kept because people dislike closing doors they may need later.
The hidden mechanism is Future Visibility. A product box quietly preserves multiple futures at once. Perhaps the item will be sold. Perhaps it will be moved safely. Perhaps a problem will appear unexpectedly. Throwing the box away means giving up those possibilities, and many people postpone that decision.
Because the cost of keeping the box feels small, the decision is repeatedly delayed. This creates a behavior loop: uncertainty encourages storage, storage delays decisions, and delayed decisions normalize storage.
The unexpected consequence is that homes begin storing imagined futures instead of present needs. People think they keep boxes because they might need them someday. Often, they keep them because certainty feels harder to throw away than cardboard.
