Why do people enjoy sleeping with extra pillows?
Comfort is sometimes created by the things that quietly surround us.
One pillow is enough to support the head. Yet many people surround themselves with two, three, or even more.
The extra pillows rarely serve a single purpose. One supports the neck, another rests beneath an arm, and a third quietly occupies empty space beside the body. Comfort becomes distributed rather than concentrated.
The arrangement also changes how the bed feels emotionally. Soft objects create boundaries without creating barriers. The sleeping space becomes smaller, warmer, and easier to trust.
Sleep researchers have observed that people often rest better when environments feel secure and predictable. Physical comfort matters, but emotional comfort matters as well.
People think extra pillows exist to support the body. Sometimes they exist to remind the body that it is safe enough to let go.
