Before it, the athlete usually shortens the gap or moves out of the slipstream. During it, speed must rise enough to overcome both the other runner’s forward movement and the distance required for clearance. After it, the athlete must prevent an immediate re-pass and find a sustainable rhythm.

If the speed difference is too small, the runners remain side by side. The pass then lasts longer, may force the overtaking athlete onto a wider line, and gives the other runner time to respond. A hesitant pass can therefore cost more than a short, decisive one even when its peak speed is lower.

An early pass with no next purpose is different. The athlete spends energy to change the order, but the race has not yet reached a point where that order matters. Competitors can remain attached, use the new leader, and reverse the position later.

Good timing therefore does not always mean waiting as long as possible. It means aligning the expense of the pass with a place where the new position produces a return. The question is not merely, “Can I overtake now?” It is, “What will this position allow me to do after I arrive?”

Athletes sometimes pass because remaining behind feels intolerable. The runner ahead clips the rhythm, appears weaker, blocks the view, or occupies a position the athlete believes should belong to someone faster. The move resolves irritation, but emotional relief is not necessarily tactical profit.

A disciplined runner can tolerate a temporarily imperfect position while preparing a cleaner move. The athlete watches the wind, the course, the next group, and the rival’s rhythm.
