Can a Technology Improve Production Without Improving the Position of the People Producing?
Production and position are not the same thing
A workplace can produce more goods, better services, and fewer errors without improving the lives of the people who make that production possible.
The distinction is easy to miss because technical progress is often presented as social progress. If production becomes faster, cleaner, safer, or more reliable, it may appear that everyone involved has moved forward.
But the quality of production and the position of the producer are different questions.
Production can improve while wages remain unchanged, job security declines, autonomy disappears, and responsibility becomes more concentrated at the bottom of the organization.
What does a worker’s position include?
A worker’s position is not measured only by the number on a payslip. It also includes the ability to influence decisions, control working time, develop and retain skills, receive recognition, refuse unsafe demands, and predict what will happen next month.
A technology may improve one part of this position while weakening another. A machine may reduce physical strain but increase surveillance. Software may simplify routine work but make the worker easier to replace. An automated system may reduce errors while making the human operator responsible for failures that the operator cannot control.

The same improvement can strengthen or weaken workers
Whether technology improves a worker’s position depends on how the gain is organized.
A safer machine can reduce injury and improve working life. It can also be used to increase the number of tasks assigned to each employee. A better scheduling system can make shifts more predictable. It can also make workers permanently available for last-minute changes.
The technical object does not contain one fixed social result. Its consequences are shaped by ownership, management, law, collective bargaining, and the distribution of decision-making power.
Absolute improvement does not guarantee a stronger position
A worker’s material condition can improve while the worker’s position becomes weaker in relative terms.
Wages may rise slightly while productivity and profits rise much faster. The workplace may become cleaner while workers lose control over how tasks are performed. Employees may receive better equipment while becoming more replaceable because the equipment contains more of the knowledge that once belonged to them.
This creates a distinction between living better and having more power. A technical improvement may raise the general level of comfort without changing who controls production.
The producer can benefit from progress and still remain subordinate within the system that organizes it.
When capability moves into the system
Technology often transfers part of a person’s effective capability into an external tool. A worker may perform better because the system remembers procedures, checks calculations, recommends actions, or supplies information at the right moment.
This can increase combined performance. It can also make the worker’s independent ability harder to see.
When the system works reliably, different levels of skill may produce similar routine results. The organization may then conclude that individual expertise matters less than it actually does. The difference becomes visible only when the system fails, encounters an unusual case, or produces a contradictory recommendation.
The technology has improved production, but it may have weakened the institution’s understanding of the human capabilities supporting that production.
Deskilling is not always the disappearance of skill
Skill does not have to vanish in order to lose value. It can be collected, standardized, embedded in software, and placed under the control of an organization.
A worker may still need judgment, but the system may recognize only the final output. The knowledge used to produce that output becomes invisible. Training becomes shorter, replacement becomes easier, and the worker’s contribution becomes harder to negotiate.
This is one reason technical progress can improve production while leaving producers in a weaker position. The system becomes more capable, but the people inside it become less able to demonstrate why they are necessary.
The artificial intelligence version
Artificial intelligence brings this tension into ordinary knowledge work. A person may use AI to research, draft, classify, translate, analyze, or coordinate more effectively. The organization may produce better results with fewer delays.
Yet the worker may not receive higher pay, greater autonomy, or more time. Instead, the organization may increase the number of clients, documents, decisions, or communications expected from the same person.
The worker’s output improves, while the worker’s bargaining position remains unchanged.
There is also a new problem of responsibility. When AI recommends an action, the organization may claim the benefit of speed while assigning the human worker responsibility for any failure. The system controls the recommendation, but the person signs the decision.
Technology changes production before it changes power
Technical improvement is often easier to achieve than social improvement. A company can purchase a machine, install software, or adopt an automated workflow in a short period. Changing wages, authority, ownership, and institutional rules requires negotiation and conflict.
This is why technology can move quickly while the position of workers remains almost unchanged.
The deeper question is not whether production improved. It is whether the people producing gained a stronger position within the system that now produces more.
