Why Is Offside Given in Soccer?

The rule is designed to keep attacking play fair, not to punish movement itself.

Offside is given to prevent attackers from gaining an unfair advantage by waiting behind the defense.

Offside is given because soccer would become much less balanced if attackers could stand near the goal and wait for long passes all game. The rule encourages teams to build attacks, time runs properly, and beat the defense through movement rather than simple goal-hanging. A player is not punished just for being ahead of defenders; the offense is called only when the player is in an offside position at the relevant moment and becomes involved in play.
