Why Do Pitchers Throw Inside to Power Hitters?
Taking away comfort can be as important as throwing strikes.
Many power hitters generate their best results when they can fully extend their swing. Inside pitches disrupt that comfort zone and force quicker reactions.
A well-located fastball on the inner half can jam a hitter, producing weak contact or broken bats. It can also make outside pitches more effective later in the at-bat because the hitter must respect both sides of the plate.
The strategy requires precision. A pitch intended for the inside corner that drifts toward the middle may become exactly the pitch a power hitter wants.
Pitchers often use inside pitches not only to record outs but also to establish territory. By showing they can attack inside, they make the entire strike zone more difficult for hitters to cover.
