Why Do Basketball Teams Intentionally Foul Late In Games?
A foul can be a mistake early in a game and a strategy late in one.
Intentional fouling late in basketball is a clock-management strategy. If a team is behind and the opponent has the ball, simply playing normal defense may allow the leading team to drain the clock. By fouling, the trailing team stops time and sends the opponent to the free-throw line. This is risky because the opponent may score, but it also creates a chance to regain possession quickly. The strategy works best when the fouling team believes it can score fast on the next possession or when the opponent has weak free-throw shooters. Coaches are not fouling because they want to give away points; they are choosing the least bad option. If the other team can hold the ball for 20 or 30 seconds, the game may effectively end. A foul keeps the game alive, even if the price is allowing free throws.
