When Should a Pitcher Work Around a Leadoff Hitter?
The first battle of an inning can influence everything that follows.
Leadoff hitters often influence the entire inning. A walk, single, or extra-base hit can immediately place pressure on the defense and force the pitcher into a more cautious approach.
When facing an elite leadoff hitter, pitchers may avoid throwing predictable strikes early in the count. Instead, they try to expand the zone, change speeds, or attack perceived weaknesses.
The strategy becomes more common late in close games. Allowing a dangerous leadoff hitter to drive the ball can be more damaging than falling slightly behind in the count.
At the same time, excessive caution carries its own risk. Free baserunners increase run expectancy, so pitchers must balance respect for the hitter against the danger of issuing walks.
