When Should a Pitcher Throw a Fastball Up in the Zone?
Changing eye level can be as important as changing speed.
Modern hitters often train to attack pitches in the lower half of the strike zone. As a result, elevated fastballs can create uncomfortable swing paths.
The strategy becomes even more effective when paired with breaking balls thrown lower in the zone. After seeing downward movement, hitters may struggle to adjust to a fastball appearing above their expected path.
Pitchers with strong velocity or high spin rates tend to benefit most from this approach because their fastballs appear to stay above the bat longer.
Location remains critical. A high fastball near the top of the strike zone can be difficult to square up, while a misplaced fastball in the middle of the zone may travel a long distance.
