What Is Par in Golf?

Par is the target score that defines each hole.

Par is the expected number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete a hole.

Par in golf is the standard score assigned to a hole based on its length and difficulty. A par-3, par-4, or par-5 tells players how many strokes a skilled golfer is expected to need. Scores are then described relative to par, such as birdie, bogey, or eagle. Understanding par makes golf scoring much easier because the real comparison is not just total strokes, but strokes above or below par.
