What Is Added Time in Soccer?

The clock keeps running, so the referee adds time back.

Added time is extra time added at the end of each half to make up for stoppages during play.

Added time, also called stoppage time or injury time, is used because the game clock does not stop for most interruptions. Referees add time for injuries, substitutions, goal celebrations, time-wasting, VAR checks, and other delays. The number shown is usually a minimum amount, so the referee may allow more time if further stoppages happen. Added time is part of normal play, not extra time used in knockout matches.
