What Is a Strike in Baseball?

A strike moves the batter closer to an out.

A strike is a pitch or swing outcome that counts against the batter, usually when the batter misses, does not swing at a pitch in the strike zone, or hits a foul in many situations.

A strike in baseball is part of the count between pitcher and batter. A batter gets a strike for swinging and missing, not swinging at a pitch in the strike zone, or hitting a foul ball under most conditions. Three strikes usually mean the batter is out. The strike count shapes the duel because it affects how aggressive the pitcher and batter can be on the next pitch.
