What Is a No-Ball in Cricket?

A no-ball punishes an illegal delivery before the batter even needs to score.

A no-ball is an illegal delivery in cricket that gives the batting team an extra run and often an extra ball.

A no-ball in cricket is called when the bowler delivers the ball illegally. Common reasons include overstepping the crease, bowling above permitted height, or using an illegal action. The batting side receives an extra run, and the delivery usually does not count as one of the six legal balls in the over. In many formats, a no-ball can also lead to a free hit, making it especially costly.
