What Is a Handball in Soccer?

Not every touch on the arm is automatically handball.

A handball is an offense when a player illegally touches the ball with the hand or arm.

A handball in soccer is called when a player uses the hand or arm in a way the rules consider illegal. Referees look at factors such as whether the arm made the body unnaturally bigger, whether the movement was deliberate, and how close the player was to the ball. Accidental contact is not always an offense. Handball decisions can be controversial because small details, especially inside the penalty area, can lead to major consequences.
