What Is a Double Bogey in Golf?

A double bogey is where one bad hole starts to hurt the round.

A double bogey is a golf score of two strokes over par on a hole.

A double bogey means the player has taken two strokes more than par to complete a hole. For example, a 6 on a par-4 is a double bogey. It often happens after a penalty, a lost ball, a difficult bunker shot, or several missed recovery chances. Double bogeys matter because they can quickly undo the benefit of previous birdies or steady play.
