Should you avoid arriving without a hotel reservation?

Freedom feels better when the first night has a bed.

It is usually safer to book at least the first night before arriving in a new destination.

Arriving without a hotel reservation can work in low season, small flexible trips, or destinations with many available rooms, but it can be risky in unfamiliar cities. Late arrivals, festivals, peak season, bad weather, visa requirements, and limited transport can make last-minute accommodation stressful or expensive. Booking at least the first night gives you a safe landing point, especially after a long flight or border crossing. After that, you can stay flexible if your travel style allows it. The risk is not only finding a room; it is finding a safe, fair-priced room when you are tired and carrying luggage.
