Identity Investment
People rarely fear losing a job. They fear losing the version of themselves built around it.
Identity Investment describes the tendency of people to invest their sense of self into professions, skills, social roles, or long-term achievements. As these external structures change, people may experience anxiety not only because of practical consequences, but because their identity itself feels threatened.
Examples
- Fear of AI replacing jobs; retirement anxiety; career changes; athletes ending their careers; artists facing automation; parents struggling after children leave home.
