Is It Safe to Walk With Headphones in a New City?
Music changes a street. Sometimes it also hides it.
Walking with headphones in a new city is not automatically unsafe, but it can reduce awareness of traffic, bicycles, scooters, people approaching, or announcements in public spaces. The risk is higher at night, in quiet streets, crowded markets, transit stations, or areas where you need to read local signals quickly. A safer compromise is using one earbud, keeping volume low, or removing headphones when navigating, crossing streets, or using public transport. Travelers often rely on sound more than they realize. Hearing footsteps, vehicles, warnings, or station changes can help prevent small mistakes. Headphones are fine in low-risk settings, but unfamiliar environments reward more attention than routine places at home.
