Is It Safe to Use Unofficial Taxis While Traveling?
A ride without a record can become a problem without a witness.
Unofficial taxis are generally less safe than licensed taxis or verified ride-hailing services because there is often no clear record of the driver, route, fare, or complaint process. The risk may be small in some places, but travelers are more vulnerable when they do not know local prices, language, or transport norms. Common problems include inflated fares, route manipulation, pressure tactics, and in rare cases personal safety concerns. A safer approach is to use official taxi ranks, hotel-arranged transport, licensed airport transfers, or ride apps with driver details and trip tracking. If an unofficial driver approaches you inside a terminal or near a tourist area, it is usually better to decline politely and move toward a marked transport point.
