How Do Pitchers Hide Their Grip Before the Release?
The less a hitter sees, the more a pitcher controls.
Hitters constantly search for clues before a pitch is thrown. A visible grip can reveal whether a fastball, slider, curveball, or changeup is coming.
To prevent that, pitchers keep the ball concealed in the glove while receiving signs and setting their grip. Many also work to make every delivery look identical until the ball leaves the hand.
Consistent mechanics are critical. If a pitcher changes arm speed, glove position, or hand action based on pitch type, observant hitters may detect patterns.
Pitch deception begins long before release. The goal is to ensure that recognition occurs as late as possible, leaving the hitter with less time to react.
