Does a Sacrifice Bunt Always Help the Offense?
Giving away an out has a cost.
A sacrifice bunt trades one resource for another. The offense gains a base but loses an out.
In low-scoring situations, that trade may be worthwhile because a single run has tremendous value. Late innings of a tie game are a common example.
However, statistical analysis has shown that giving away outs can reduce total run production in many situations, especially early in games.
Managers weigh the likelihood of scoring one run against the possibility of generating a larger inning. The answer is rarely automatic and often depends on context.
