A basketball team can absolutely win while making fewer shots than its opponent. The reason is that not all made shots have the same value. A team that makes several three-pointers can outscore a team that makes more two-point baskets. Free throws also matter because they add points without counting as field goals. Turnovers, offensive rebounds, and fouls can further change the math. For example, one team might make 38 shots and lose to a team that makes 35 because the winning team hit more threes and free throws. This is why modern basketball focuses so much on shot quality. A layup, an open three, and a contested mid-range shot are not equal in strategic value. The number of made shots tells part of the story, but efficiency, shot selection, and free-throw opportunities often explain the final score better.
